Almost Christmas!

On Wednesday evening we went to the opening night at Sophie Gannon Gallery to look at the collection of wonderful paintings by Nicholas Harding called Beachlife.

I went to Hell's Kitchen for a (1) glass of wine with a collague of mine after work yesterday and staggered (yes, I am a lightweight awnd I must have seem quite tipsy as the sales lady at Biotherm @ Myer wasn't very interested in selling me anything. In fact, she asked if the moisturiser I was after but couldn't recognise anywhere amongst the lotions and potions WAS Biotherm in the first place? I said in my best posh accent "I'll be back" turned around and walked off) home to watch the first series of Sex and the City. I still love, love, love that series and it never seems to get boring, no matter how may times I watch the same episodes. All I want for Christmas is the box-set.

Christmas is around the corner and the weather has been cold for Melbourne spring standards and I am loving every minute as it means I can light candles and make it cosy and all Chtistmassy. Will went to IKEA and returned home with 24 bottles of Julmust. It really is a Christmas must.

Random Ramblings

So it has been a long while since I sat down and did some serious writing. I have now finally finished my thesis and the degree is in the bag and SWEET RELIEF. I have a piece of paper that show that four years of hard work has paid off and I didn't quit. I let go for a little while, got back up on the horse and rode off into the sunset! I guess now that I'm done, the next question has arisen; what to do with my degree? I now need to find a suitable job. Ångest, ångest är min arvedel...

Melbourne is slowly moving towards summer, albeit a slightly schizophrenic one. Saturday was a balmy 29 degrees celsius and Sunday a freezing 15. I think the crazy Melbourne weather affects people (it definitely affects me) because my work colleagues, mysef included, are all quite ratty and our patience is quickly disappearing. Chucking a sickie tomorrow sounds like a better idea by the minute.

Will and I went back home to sunny Sweden in August/September and it was wonderful to be back. I went back here kicking and screaming. I really need to find a job over there and that way we can move back for a while. Having said that, I am not sure how I'll cope with the long, long cold and dark winter again. Melbourne has some good sides and some bad sides, but one of the greatest things about this place is the fact that winter is like Swedish autumn and only lasts for about 3 months.

I accidentally stapled my bright orange cardigan sleeve to a piece of paper last Friday. I think I am losing it slightly...
I bought Carla Bruni's latest album "Comme si de rien n'était" a few months back and I love it. Check out her website http://www.carlabruni.com/.

Blekfis

What do you do?

Blur or Oasis?

Oasis or Blur? Liam or Damon? Manchester or London? Working class heroes or middle class geezers?

(The blue screen of near-death).

Sorry Speech

Here is the full text of PM Rudd's apology to the stolen generations.

"Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.
We reflect on their past mistreatment.
We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.
We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.
We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.
To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.
And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.
We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.
For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.
We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.
A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.
A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.
A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.
A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.
A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia."

On my Mind

Oh dear and my, oh my, how long it has been since I sat down and wrote something to put on this little page of mine.

I have (sort of) made peace with CSN in that they let me pay by three instalments instead of four and I don't have to pay any extra fees. This new savings scheme still makes me as poor as a pauper and I don't like it one bit. Am I never going to have some money left over at the end of the week/fortnight/month/year? I am well into my thirties and stillcan't support myself. Pathetic. To add insult to injury, I am going to only work four days a week from now on. This is the only way I can write and finish my thesis. The plan is to have it finished in August.

What else has been on my mind lately? I miss pyttipanna som fan. The Sorry-speech was beautiful and it got really emotional. I really need a haircut and a colour. Why do our goldfish fight each other every morning after thay have had their food? I really need to get back into the habit of going to the gym. It has been weeks and weeks since I last stepped inside the gym and I am growing fatter by the minute.

A cockroach was seen running from underneath the paperwork down to the floor from the desk opposite mine at work yesterday and I nearly has a heart attack. A brave colleague quicky killed it (as I stood squealing in a corner) by stepping on it and that made me, if possible, even more nervous. Is it an urban myth, or does stepping on a cockroach really make the dying thing send for backup of more of the horrid little things. In other words, can I expect one walking across my desk sometime soon?

I'm off to eat a mango.

Happy Christmas, New Year and whatever else. Unfortunately, I am in no state to be jolly right now. You see, it has finally happened. The thing I was dreading the most. The thing I knew was just around the corner, but which I still managed to block out, delete from memory and ignore. Denial, denial, denial.

C.S.N.

No, this is not another dead awful US criminal drama tv series. It is the repayment of the financial aid I received as a student. The cash itself wasn't all that much when I received it each month (they pay peanuts they get monkeys... and well, I still haven't finished my thesis), but the interest they charge over the years is hefty and hence I now have thousands (and please feel free to add chosen currency here) to repay.

Lord have mercy. Or more to the point; my bankmanager, have mercy.

So long, vi csn.
